EXCLUSIVE. How can Edward Snowden reach Latin America?
After Venezuela, Nicaragua and Bolivia have announced their agreement to grant asylum to the IT expert Edward Snowden, accused of leaking classified information about the National Security Agency’s PRISM surveillance programme, all that he needs to do is to reach Latin America from Moscow Sheremetyevo International Airport.
For the time being, Snowden was left without an official travel document. The United States of America withdrew Snowden’s citizenship and cancelled his passport. Travel papers issued by the Embassy of Ecuador for Snowden to travel to Hong Kong and then to Moscow are no longer valid either.
According to an official of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania who agreed to speak with Select News on the condition of anonymity, Snowden’s situation is not as complex as it appears. “All that is needed is that the Embassy of one of the Latin American countries in Moscow issue a passport for Snowden, preferably a diplomatic one, to avoid any problem. For this, that embassy should possess a mobile personal data collection unit (photos, fingerprints etc.). One of that specific country’s diplomats, who can access freely the transit area of the airport, can meet Snowden and complete the formalities”, stated the official.
